Cols & Cobbles

Coming soon!

This section will feature famous climbs (cols) and cobbled sections from iconic races.

What is this?

I'm Sam, an Aussie cycling fan and I've built this little bike race mapping project. The aim is to bring together mapping data of bike races in a format that makes it easy for us to engage with the sport. This is just the start. I've got ideas for improvements but suspect that other fans (ie. you) will have great ideas about things you'd like to see. So if you do, please reach out!

The Map

Is interactive. Scroll around, use the search bar to find your favourite Col. You can use ctrl or the right mouse to adjust the pitch and view the World in 3D. The 'Charts' tab will be activated when a feature or features are selected and the charts themselves are interactive. Use them to further explore the races. If you want a very specific selection (ie. you really want to know who won stage 1 of the 2015 Giro) you can use the custom filter tool. You'll be delighted to discover the Aussies torched it.

Limitations

This dataset is driven by the available spatial data. If I don't have geospatial data for the race, then the race or race winner won't show up in the charts. As such, this doesn't show every race a rider has won, just every race they've won for which I have data. It also means that feats like Boonen winning Roubaix four times isn't here. The earliest Roubaix I have is 2012. The dataset isn't perfect but it's good and getting better all the time. Found an issue? Please reach out.

Gender Bias

This is a massive problem with the project. I have many more race days for the Men's World Tour than the Women's World Tour (almost 5-1). The dataset at present has more years of MWT races and each year the men's side of the sport has more race days.

Sources

La Flamme Rouge: This forum has been invaluable. You will have seen their profiles on many race preview articles as well as on Pro Cycling Stats. It's a community forum of bike race lovers and does great work. Pro Cycling Stats has been an excellent resource for validating my data. Strava, I need spatial data for bike races and more than a few times I have used an athlete ride files as both the source and validation data.
